Crunchbang Linux and Lotus Notes 8.5

12 01 2009

Crunchbang is a custom UK distribution of Ubuntu, based around Openbox. Its designed to be a lean, quick Ubuntu Distribution. I didn’t fancy installing onto my machine, so I quickly installed it onto a USB Drive and fired it up on my Lenovo Thinkpad X61s.

It booted cleanly straight away and I decided to test it with iNotes 8.5 using Firefox. Everything appears to work, iNotes is fine, Sametime Chat is working without any issue, so I took the plunge and installed it to my hard disk.

After manually paritioning the drive ( I didn’t like the automatic suggestions ), Crashbang installed without any issue, recognising my Vista Paritions and my Lenovo recovery partition and adding them to the boot loader.

All the hardware devices (except the 3G Modem) appear to work out of the box and within minutes I was connected to my home wifi!

Next I download Lotus Notes 8.5, extracted the files to a directory and ran a sudo dpkg -i *.deb (twice, as I’m too lazy to type in the commands in the right order!!).

Lastly following Ray Davies blog, I setup a launchnotes.sh script file that performs the following;

cd /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/framework
../notes

A chmod + launchnotes.sh, was then created and I added Lotus Notes 8.5 to the Menu on Crunchbang.

So far so good! No issues at all with Notes 8.5, and a lean quick Ubuntu Operating System! .. More to follow as I get to grips with it..
