Fixed my iBook G4!!

21 12 2008

My trusty G4 ibook died sometime ago, refused to charge, and wouldnt boot. I left it in the computer graveyard, waiting for a spare moment to repair it!

I finally got round to it yesterday, after purchasing a replacement power supply on ebay! The kids (bless) had accidently tripped over the ibook and broken the power supply tip in the dc in socket. Last time they did this it was a £200 repair bill, this time, I gave it a go..

A swift delve around with a couple of saftey pins, and hey preseto the offending tip was removed..Plugged in the power supply, and phew it started to charge.

Major sigh of relief, as I didn’t fancy replacing the dc power inboard!!

Now onto the disk corruption! It turns out the laptop kept slowing down, so the kids thought it was locking and, kept switching it off, rather than shutting it down . Finally it got to the point where it wouldnt boot into OS X, even after entering single user mode and running fsck

So I fixed it by;

1. Resetting the PMU

2 Connecting a spare firewire drive and installing OS X onto

3. Performing a machine migration to migrate all the data(user files/data/applications) from the faulty install onto the firewiredrive! Luckily only one application was corrupt and failed, all other data came across!!

4. Reformatting internal drive on laptop, and reinstalling OS X

So, now I have a fresh install of OS X on my laptop, and a complete backup of the previous OS / Data and Applications on my firewire drive, ready for me to pull across..
