Lotus Symphony 1.3 on Ubuntu Jaunty

No sooner than it has been released, I’ve downloaded Lotus Symphony 1.3 and installed it onto my Ubuntu Jaunty Machine. The installation went through without any issue and now I can work with those pesky Microsoft Office 2007 Documents. You can find out more about Lotus Symphony 1.3 on http://symphony.lotus.com . Go ahead, download it, its FREE ! and a lot more stable than Office 2007 in my experience..!

Ubuntu Jaunty – KDE 4.2.x – Lotus Notes 8.5

Lotus Notes 8.5 on Jaunty with KDE 4.2.x

Lotus Notes 8.5 on Jaunty with KDE 4.2.x

This is my Lotus Notes Desktop. Its based upon Ubuntu Jaunty, with KDE 4.2 . I’m using Virtualbox which in this screen shot is running a Windows 2008 AD Controller, with Lotus Domino 8.5 and Lotus Quickr 8.2 installed upon it and with a Windows XP Administration / Demo Workstation.

KDE 4.2.x for me is great, I have issues with my Intel Chipset and Gnome/Compiz and random freezes, with KDE it works like a dream.

Now to get this all to work, you need to make sure that Lotus Notes 8.5, is setup and configured in GNOME. That pesky license agreement just doesnt want to spawn under KDE …

Updated – Lotus Foundations 1.1 and Run

30 03 2009

IBM Partnerworld has been updated with the correct Lotus Foundations 1.1 Run feature. You will need to download and install IBM Part No CZ24FML before applying IBM Part No. CZ12DML .

Although both parts have the same description CZ24FML is in fact the Run Component and contains lf-run11-5800.pkg. CZ12DML contains the VMware Server Component that should be installed after the Run component has installed successfully.

Don’t forget you will also need your Vmware Server License Key for Linux, this can be obtained by visiting the VMWare Site, clicking on Products, then Product Index, Selecting VMWare Server (a free virtual server), then clicking on Download. If you have not registered your details with VMWare you will need to do so before continuing. Once this is completed you will be presented with a license key for VMWare Server 2.0 for Windows or VMWare Server 2.0 for Linux. It’s the Linux one you need!

Lotus Foundations Start 1.1 and VMWare

25 03 2009

Ok, this appears to be a mystery. I have downloaded the IBM Foundations 1.1 RUN component, expanded it and it contains lfrun-vmware20-5800.pkg .. Now if I read the Lotus Foundations you are supposed to install the RUN package ie lf-run11-5256.pkg before you install the lfrun-vmware20-5800.pkg.

It looks like someone at IBM/Lotus has incorrectly packaged the run option in file CZ12DML.ZIP and hence thats the reason Vmware will not install on my Lotus Foundations Start 1.1 Server..

Any idea’s anyone ? btw this is on physcial hardware not virtual

Crunchbang Linux and Lotus Notes 8.5

12 01 2009

Crunchbang is a custom UK distribution of Ubuntu, based around Openbox. Its designed to be a lean, quick Ubuntu Distribution. I didn’t fancy installing onto my machine, so I quickly installed it onto a USB Drive and fired it up on my Lenovo Thinkpad X61s.

It booted cleanly straight away and I decided to test it with iNotes 8.5 using Firefox. Everything appears to work, iNotes is fine, Sametime Chat is working without any issue, so I took the plunge and installed it to my hard disk.

After manually paritioning the drive ( I didn’t like the automatic suggestions ), Crashbang installed without any issue, recognising my Vista Paritions and my Lenovo recovery partition and adding them to the boot loader.

All the hardware devices (except the 3G Modem) appear to work out of the box and within minutes I was connected to my home wifi!

Next I download Lotus Notes 8.5, extracted the files to a directory and ran a sudo dpkg -i *.deb (twice, as I’m too lazy to type in the commands in the right order!!).

Lastly following Ray Davies blog, I setup a launchnotes.sh script file that performs the following;

cd /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/framework
../notes

A chmod + launchnotes.sh, was then created and I added Lotus Notes 8.5 to the Menu on Crunchbang.

So far so good! No issues at all with Notes 8.5, and a lean quick Ubuntu Operating System! .. More to follow as I get to grips with it..

IBM Partnerworld Lotus Notes Admin/Designer 8.5

6 01 2009

I had trouble find this today but thanks to John Wylie, I’ve managed to start it downloading. To do this;

1. Go to Partnerworld Downloads then Search by part number

2. Enter in C1SQ5EN

3. Download! Now Download Director failed for me initially but I have an http transfer working right now..

Another NYE Done!

1 01 2009

Well, I’m recovering (not from Drunkeness!) after another NYE, this year in Weybridge. I spent all day yesterday sorting out music, and a DVD of Visuals to be broadcast around all the pub, on the Plasma Screens..

I used PulpMotion, with free VJ loops and some stock images from iStockPhoto to put together a really professional looking visual sequence, rendered it (it did take about 4 hrs on my ibook G4!), then imported the video into Toast, and set the sequence to repeat, on a loop before burning a bin/cue file, transferring it to my PC and burning it onto DVD (phew!)..

As to the night, 200+ people, dancing from 8.30pm to 1.30am, a real mix of music and and bar turnover that was up 400%vs last year!

I’m enjoying the whole digital DJ experience, with Traktor Pro working without any issues on a 4hr set, Platinum Notes and Mixed in Key, all help me prepare my music, and really help you get creative with your sets, finding new mixes, and making sure that key clashes and volume dropouts do not occur!!

The key here is none of my sets are pre-prepared, everything is created from the mood of the crowd in the venue. I’m constantly looking to see what people enjoy, what is working, and what doesn’t. Mixed in Key really gives me the edge here, if Electro doesn’t work, I can flick across to Funky or Classic House avoiding that key clash and seamlessly moving between musical genres.

I haven’t yet used Traktor for the whole 6hr set, there is just something inside me that needs to set DJ to manual and get onto the CD Decks, and actually work with the music.. Maybe this will change once I have a pair of CDJ400′s to control Traktor with!

As to switching between digital (laptop) and the Numark Axis CDJs, Ecler’s NUO 3 Mixer is a dream to use, with seamless transitions between the CDJ’s and Traktor, and the Numark DJ iO just works..

So today, is a traditional NewYears Day for me, relaxing, taking it easy and enjoying good food and wine..

Disneyland Paris

1 01 2009

I’ve just spent 3 days in Paris, with 2 of them at Disneyland Paris! All I can say its very expensive with the current euro versus the pound! Disney at Xmas is a magical place but I’ve never seen it so busy before with average ride wait times of 80 – 140 mins.

Highlights of the trip include meals at the Silver Spur Steakhouse and the low-light was a meal at the Chicago Steakhouse, which resulted in leaving after receiving our starters. A Caesar salad for 9 euros which has brown and lifeless lettuce is just not on..

We travelled with Eurostar to Lille, then took then SNCF to Marne La Vallee, which is so easy to do..

Tips for the trip! McDonalds for Cheap Breakfasts, Hollywood Studio’s if you want to meet the characters, use fast-pass where possible and check you luggage in at the Disney Guest Services, where they will look after you small bags for @2.50 a day..

Oh if you fancy popping into Paris, ask for a Daily Ticket as its a lot cheaper! It takes about 45mins to Chatlet, with no changes from Marne La Vallee.

The Pound vs Euro

26 12 2008

Its mad dash time today! I’m off to Disneyland Paris tomorrow morning and quickly checked out the ticket prices €106 for a 2 day hopper . Now that wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the current economic crisis! At Barclays, €100 came to £99.32! eek!

So a quick call on Boxing Day to the Guildford Disney Store, and they have come to our rescure, with a discounted 1 day park hopper, at £36 each. I’m also going to check out the prices for Disneyworld Orlando, to see if I can save before going to Lotusphere.
